Santa Maria al Bagno

Santa Maria al Bagno is an attractive touristic center in the municipality of Nardò, set in the middle of the fabulous bay from Gallipoli up to Santa Caterina

This settlement has born as fishermen suburb and shelter for the ships from the storm. On Medioevo age, Santa Maria al Bagno was consistently predated by the pirates, the Saracens and the Venetian people; its inhabitants were forced to abandon it and to move to other places. Subsequently, in 1550 for want of Charles V, some sighting towers were built along the whole coast to defend from the invasions.

The largest one was the Galatena River’s Tower, built in order to defend the many sweet water sources coming form the rock; today it’s called “Quattro Colonne” (Translation: Four Columns), as the whole building fell down and only the four towers are still up now.

Thanks to the beautiful sea and coast, Santa Maria al Bagno is still today place of vacation for the inhabitants of the near towns and the numerous tourists in search of limpid sea and variegated and wild coasts.
